More info about Worcester Museum

Previously known as the Kleinplasie Open Air Museum, the Worcester Museum consists of a number of buildings laid out in the form of an old Cape farmyard and where old traditions are demonstrated to captive audiences. The museum is both highly educational and fun, farm animals roam the yard and children get to interact with them and enjoy the demonstrations. The demonstrations are carried out by staff wearing period costumes and include soap making, horse shoe smithing, sheep shearing and bread baking. Distilling of witblits, the local version of a high proof spirit, is done at the museum. During the grape harvesting season, visitors can help to extract grape juice for the making of witblits by using the age-old method of jumping into a vat and crushing them with bare feet! The buildings are modelled on traditional structures and a few examples are a Khoisan reed hut, a water mill, lime kiln and tobacco shed.

Inside the main museum building are strange and unusual agricultural exhibits, leather products and old wine and brandy brands from years gone by.

The onsite restaurant serves traditional dishes; sample the chicken pies, bobotie – a type of spicy mince casserole, and waterblommetjie bredie, a stew made from water lilies. A small shop sells curios and items created at the museum.

Alongside are the showgrounds where an agricultural expo takes place annually. The event is well attended with an exciting programme spanning a full week. Also alongside the museum is a small reptile park displaying South African snakes, lizards and other reptiles, and the Kleinplasie Raceway where weekend race car drivers test their driving skills and the performance of their modified vehicles on the oval track.

The Worcester Museum is on the R60 road towards Robertson and a 90-minute drive from Cape Town.
